Gain some experience

Your success in the courtroom will largely depend on your experience. However, the only way to gain experience and learn from others is to attend court sessions and trials similar to yours. Doing so will give your ideas on how to handle your own cases.

Get to know court rules and procedures

Every court has its own set of rules that determine how you are going to present your arguments, question witnesses and conduct yourself during sessions. With this in mind, it is important that you familiarize yourself with these rules and procedures specific to your court.

Pick your judge or jury

The legal profession allows lawyers the option of choosing between a judge and a jury, depending on the complexities of the case. Jury trials are ideal for emotionally appealing cases, while judge trials are for complex cases. However, you stand a higher chance of success with judge trials, especially if you are representing yourself.

List and meet all your deadlines

Most attorneys don’t succeed, mainly due to poor time management, and failure to meet deadlines. And since courts run on a schedule, the judge may throw out your case if you fail to work within the set timelines.

Keep track of everything in a trial notebook

Buy a notebook to help you keep track of your strategies, argument points, trial dates, witness questions and everything else concerning your case.

Get familiar with your case

A case can quickly go against you if you are not familiar with the elements involved. In contrast, winning can get much easier if you know the inside and out of your case. With this in mind, always ensure that you prepare well by getting the facts and outlining your strategies before going to court.

Ensure your evidence is admissible in court

Succeeding in the courtroom is all about presenting concrete evidence. With this in mind, you are advised to ensure that your facts and evidence are admissible before presenting them in court.

Show respect

You might have all the evidence and witnesses to win a case. However, if you are disrespectful to the court, judge and/or the opposing team, the judge has every right to throw your case out. If you want things to move smoothly, always show respect to everyone in the courtroom.

Articulate your case clearly

Be firm and assert your case clearly and precisely. Articulating your case will ensure that everyone is able to hear and comprehend your presentation of facts.

Stay calm

Court cases can sometimes become frustrating, especially if things are not going your way. However, this does not mean that you should interrupt sessions or cause havoc. Instead, always keep your cool and the rest will fall in place.
